I’m Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid is a carefully crafted novel about a couple on a road trip to have dinner with the parents. Or so it seems.

From the very first page you are captured by a strange, vague reference to ending things. Reid is a master at creating mystery and suspense from the very beginning. That suspense is eased up a bit in the beginning as you hear the story of how the couple met. But soon after there are other strange occurrences that send a chill down your spine.

Adding to this is the fact that the story is interrupted at certain points by a conversation between two people discussing an unknown man committing an unthinkable act. As the story goes on, you begin to feel more scared despite nothing particularly frightful actually happening.

All of this wraps up into an ending that will leave you speechless.

However, the suspense isn’t the only thing that will keep you reading. Throughout the story is fascinating philosophical conversation between the two main characters. They discuss thought provoking topics that will make you reflect on your own life and how you view the world.

The characters also have a lot of depth and interesting aspects about them. Reid makes you feel as though you have a good idea about what they are like, even though you really don’t.

This is a great novel for people that want to read more intense books but still want to be able to sleep at night. It has all of the suspense, mystery, and intrigue of any good horror story, but without a lot of fantasy and terror. You will find yourself looking at the world a bit different for a few days after you finish it. Whether you love horror stories or not, this book is a fantastic read.
