Karrie Norton, Charles Vargas, Jessie Smith, Acacia Swan, and Victor Mata. What do these 5 seemingly random people have in common? Well, not only are they members of ProStart, they are on Murray’s ProStart Competition Team.

The Competition is split into 3 stages, regionals, state and nationals. Regionals took place on February 12th, state takes place on March 12th, and Nationals take place in April in Washington DC. For the competition the teams are given 2 butane burners, and an hour to cook a 3 course meal. “Basically 50 to cook, 10 to plate,” comments Team Captain Karrie Norton.

The goal for regionals is to place in the top 5 out of about 11 or 12 teams. Murrays, team placed in 5th, but are practicing hard to take 1st in state. If they are to take 1st in state, they will be sent to nationals. “If you make it to nationals, you pretty much get a full ride to any culinary school you want to go too,” says Norton. “Chef Gray thinks we have a strong enough team to make it to state.”

The team is now practicing 4 days a week, and are looking forward to state!
